Match 'em Up Memory Games

Test your powers of concentration -- remember the old TV game show? -- by matching up some of these classic emblems of unit pride and uncommon valor.

  • U.S. Army Division Patches
Although distinctive unit emblems date back to the Civil War, the adoption of the first formally authorized division insignia took place in 1918, when American troops in France came up with the first shoulder sleeve patches. Most of the other well-known patches got their start during World War II, including the first armored and airborne units.

    U.S. Navy Squadron Patches
Fierce unit pride has long been a hallmark of the U.S. Navy's air arm. Over the past decades, many squadrons have come up with classic, bold designs that defiantly set them apart from all "rivals." After all who wants to mess with Grim Reapers, Red Rippers, or Fighting 31?

    U.S. Military Decorations
In 1782, General Washington instituted America's first badge for gallantry when he recognized the need "to foster and encourage every species of Military Merit." Since these first awards, our nation has continued to honor its fighting men and women with distinctive awards for their bravery and service.
