African Americans in the Civil WarBrewing Up a Storm A Union Army cook prepares a meal in 1863. Northern forces weren't technically the first to see the value of having black troops. Early in the war, the 1st Louisiana Native Guard was created with 10,000 freed black men in 1861 to protect the state from Union advances, and included the first black officers in either the Union or the Confederacy. It was forced to dissolve in 1862, however, and one out of 10 of its members went on to fight for the Union. Photos and Text Provided by Our Partner: LIFE.com. See more pictures at LIFE.com |
