Live With It

Though it might not be the stuff that Michael Bay films are made, the alternative to going in blasting is to recognize the problem, keep sailing and avoid eye contact. Reason being that recent headlines makes it sound like pirates attack every ship in the Gulf of Aden. But in reality, piracy happens so infrequently that insurance companies have not even raised their premiums for sailing in pirate-infested waters. And the $40 million in ransom that pirates have raised is paltry compared to the billions earned in commerce. So while this may be little consolation for the crews that are held hostage, paying the ransom and freeing the crews are, more often than not, less likely to result in the deaths of innocent people—and the raising of those all-important insurance rates.
