Arm the Crew

This would seem like an easy enough solution, hoping that if pirates were greeted by an armed crew or security guards, they would turn tail and run. Would this have been the case when pirates took over Captain Richard Phillips and his crew on the Maersk Alabama?

However, this would no only be unpopular with the shipping companies that have to pay more, but it would also lead to legal problems if they fire on an innocent vessel. So until shipping companies would rather insure against pirates than pay the ransoms, this isn't much of an option. However, frustrated crews have taken to arming themselves. "As long as the politicians don't make up their minds, then we have to act ourselves," one sailor told Reuters.
