Don't Pay the Ransom

 

Would unpaid ransoms be enough deterrent? Possibly but it's a very risky gamble. Plus, the PR nightmare a shipping company would face if it refused to pay the ransom for their kidnapped crew is unimaginable. Better off paying the ransom—which, though in the millions, is still "affordable"—than be the first to take a stand against pirates this way.
