Totally Star TrekHere it is![]() Trauma pod is the latest in immediate diagnosis and treatment for the wounded. Looks like a biobed from Star Trek, right? More on Military RobotsDeveloped by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), a world leader in high-risk experimental projects for military applications, the Trauma Pod is the latest in immediate diagnosis and treatment for wounded soldiers and their battlefield extraction. The Trauma Pod is scheduled for deployment in 2009. Once an injured soldier is extracted from the battlefield, he or she is placed on the Trauma Pod's bed and diagnosis begins. Trauma Pod is actually a series of multifunctional robots working together to complete several procedures at once, such as CT scans (a primary diagnostic program), the administration of painkillers and antiseptics from a revolving rack with various syringes and tools needed for the procedure, cauterization of heavy bleeding, and insertion of breathing tubes and IVs. The surgeon will control some of the functions and tell the pod what not to do, such as removing an IV or breathing tube. A single surgeon can operate the pod from a remote location. The Trauma Pod is a little bulky at its current development stage; however, when it hits the battlefield in 2009, the unit should be small enough to fit in a Stryker. |
