The MULE Multi-Utility/Logistics Equipment VehicleIt's a hybrid!![]() Meet the MULE, a mid-sized UGV that transports equipment and/or supplies. More on Military RobotsThe MULE (multifunction utility/logistics equipment vehicle) is an unmanned platform that can transport equipment and/or supplies. Each of the MULE's wheels is attached to a single robotic arm, capable of a 360-degree range of motion. Each wheel performs in tandem with the other five, or can be totally independent of itself. Rollovers are a cinch. On its side the MULE can shift the balance by moving its arms in various positions, which causes it to land properly on its belly or back. The MULE can roll right side up or down and is configured for air-drop and long-range operations . Oh! And get this -- it’s a hybrid. Hybrid electric engines assure longevity and silent running on the battlefield. It’s very important to have the ability to run silent and low. Today's battlefield demands stealth capabilities in all aspects. The MULE has the ability to crouch low enough to get below brush and other low-lying objects, which makes it a perfect platform for getting a payload of munitions to dismounted ground troops or possibly carrying a wounded soldier to safety. The 15-foot-long, 6-foot-wide vehicle will be capable of carrying a payload of up to 2,000 pounds of weapons, supplies or personnel. The MULE is mobile enough to maneuver alongside dismounted forces within an operational area, but to get the operational area, the MULE is towed by a larger vehicle. Upon detachment, the MULE has a semi-autonomous navigation system and can also be fitted with a follow device. This allows a single soldier to call on the UGV for supplies and ordinance. A robotic arm enables easy loading and unloading of heavy cargo. Survivability in an unknown area is vital, and a UGV must be ready to meet all challenges, such as rocks , trees, ditches and other unforeseen objects. The MULE can sustain a moderate crash into or onto heavy objects. It also has the ability to stack itself on top of another MULE for transport and cargo reasons. But wait, there's more! MULE can also act as a water generation and purification station, as well as charge batteries for the individual infantry personnel on the battlefield. What’s next? Well, weapons, of course. This UGV has day and night thermal, infrared and forward-looking imaging systems inside the nose of the mule, as well as chemical-biological sensors. MULE can communicate with manned and unmanned ground and aerial vehicles, for a true 360-degree view of the battlefield. There is a wide range of future applications for the MULE, such as onboard weapons system. Fitted with guidance sensors and anti-aircraft missiles and weapons for ground operations, the UGV will seek out a target, acquire lock on and blow it right out of the sky. Until total autonomy is perfected, the weapons system will be operated remotely by an individual. |
