Top Ten Snipers

10. Anonymous Civil War Sniper

By all accounts Union Maj. Gen. John Sedgwick (pictured here) was a good leader, and an even better man. But on May 9, 1864, he was having a bad day at the office.

It was the middle of the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, and his men were throwing themselves to the ground and taking cover to avoid the Confederate snipers who were shooting from Laurel Hill, about 500 yards from the Union soldiers' position.

"I am ashamed of you, dodging that way," Maj. Gen. Sedgwick supposedly yelled at his men, "They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance." Famous last words. One of those Confederate sharpshooters proved Sedwick wrong with a bullet through the general's cheek. He died a short time later.
