No. 5 - Polaris![]() Introduced in the 1960s, the Polaris was the first ballistic missile made to be launched from a submarine -- which is cool in and of itself, but also strategically important.
Since these missiles would be carried on subs, it was thought that they would survive a Soviet first strike, or sneak attack, and be available to launch a devastating retaliatory attack on Soviet cities.
