Before Monty Python used them to hurl cows, trebuchets greatly increased the reach of armies that were used to attacking with swords, knives and axes.

The trebuchet also gave birth to biological warfare. Not only could it throw rocks great distances, but the trebuchet could also hurl a plague-infested body over an enemy's fortified walls.
